What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard, created by the Council of Europe, that describes how well a person can use a language. It is widely used by schools, universities and employers around the world.

What does CEFR allow you to do?

Each level describes what you can actually do in English, so you always know where you are and what comes next.

🗣️ At CEFR A1 you can…

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases
  • Introduce yourself and others
  • Ask and answer simple questions about where you live, people you know and things you have
  • Handle simple situations such as shopping, ordering food and asking for directions
  • Take part in a simple conversation when the other person speaks slowly and clearly

🎯 Why it matters

  • A clear, internationally understood way to describe your level of English
  • Proof of your progress, with an official certificate of completion
  • A way for schools and employers to see what you can do in English
  • A clear next step: after A1 comes A2, then B1 and beyond
